Der Verweis auf Ksitigarbha kann in dem buddhistischen Text der [[Mahayana]] gefunden werden. Im chinesischen Kanon, wird er in Gestalt des klassischen Bodhisattva dargestellt. Jedoch wird er zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt als [[Mönch]] und nicht als Bodhisattva gesehen. Ksitigarbha soll seine Mission nach dem [[Tod]] des [[Buddha]] und nach der Ankunft des neuen Buddha oder [[Maitreya]] vollbringen. Aus diesem Grund wird er oft als einer der wichtigsten Bodhisattvas im [[Buddhismus]] gefeiert.<br /> <br /> Der chinesischen [[Tradition]] folgend, lebt Ksitigarbha auf dem Jiuhua [[Berg]], welches einer der vier bedeutenden buddhistischen Berge in China ist. Auf diesem Berg waren einst 300 Buddhistische [[Tempel]], von denen heute noch 95 der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich sind. In Japan ist Ksitigarbha als Familienvater und Beschützer der [[Kind]]er gesehen und ist als Jizo allgemein bekannt. Da er mit Kindern in Verbindung gebracht wird, sieht sein [[Gesicht]] aus wie das eines Babys. Des Weiteren rettet er die [[Seele]]n aus in der Reisenden vom [[Leid]]en der [[Unterwelt]].<br /> <br /> Im buddhistischen Text des Ksitigarbha [[Sutra]] heißt es, dass er ein junges, heiliges [[Brahmane]]nmädchen war. Dieses kleine Mädchen betete täglich zu Buddha um die Seele seiner [[Mutter]] vor der [[Hölle]] zu retten. Beeindruckt von den Anstrengungen des Mädchens gewährte Gautama Buddha ihrer Mutter die [[Freude]]n des [[Himmel]]s. Von diesen Ereignissen tief bewegt, legte das heilige Mädchen das Gelübde ab, den Leidenden zu helfen.
