Der Legende nach ging Shankara mit seinen Schülern am [[Ganges]] entlang. Dabei sah er einen alten Mann, der [[Sanskrit]] Grammatikregeln rezitierte. Shankara wurde von Mitgefühl erfüllt. Spontan flossen Worte aus seinem Mund, die den alten Mann dazu inspirieren sollten, sich nicht mehr um Sanskrit Grammatik zu kümmern, sondern Gott zu verehren. So entstanden die ersten Strophen dieses Liedes &amp;quot;Bhaja Govindam&amp;quot;. Als Shankara geendet hatte, beteiligte sich jeder seiner [[Schüler]] an diesem Lehrgedicht, indem er eine weitere Strophe komponierte. &lt;br /&gt;
1. Bete Govinda an, bete Govinda an, Du Verblendeter! Wenn das Ende nahe sein wird, werden Grammatik-Kenntnisse Dich nicht retten.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2. O Du Verblendeter, gebe Deine Sehnsucht nach Reichtum auf. Mache Dein Bewusstsein frei von Begierden und fülle es mit dem Gedanken an Brahman. Sei mit dem glücklich, was Du als Ergebnis Deiner vorigen Handlungen (Karma) bekommst.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3. Sei nicht in den weiblichen Körper vernarrt. Erinnere Dich immer wieder daran, dass er nur aus Fleisch, Fett und ähnlichen Substanzen zusammengesetzt wird.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
4. Das Leben ist genau so vorübergehend wie Wassertropfen auf einem Lotusblumenblatt. Wisse, dass die ganze Welt fest im Griff von Krankheit, Kummer und Ego ist.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
5. Die Familie einer Person liebt ihn nur so lange wie er im Stande ist Geld zu verdienen. Später, sobald der Körper schwach geworden ist, fragt auch keiner im Haus mehr nach ihm.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
6. Solange noch Atem in seinem Körper ist, erkundigen sich die Angehörigen im Haus nach seinem Wohlergehen. Sobald ihn jedoch der Atem verlassen hat, fürchten sogar diejenigen, welche auf ihn angewiesen waren, seine Leiche.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
7. Denke daran, dass Reichtum immer böse ist; es gibt nicht die geringste Spur von Glück in ihm. Für die Reichen existiert sogar Angst vor ihren Söhnen; dies ist überall die Regel.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
8. Das Kind möchte immerzu spielen; der junge Mann ist in das andere Geschlecht verliebt; der alte Mann ist immer in seine Sorgen versunken; Keiner denkt jemals an das höchste Brahman.&lt;br /&gt;

9. Wer ist Deine Frau? Wer ist Dein Sohn? Diese vergängliche Welt ist in der Tat sehr merkwürdig. Zu wem gehörst du? Woher bist Du gekommen? O Bruder, denke über die Wahrheit von allen diesen (Fragen) nach.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
10. Gesellschaft mit dem Guten führt zu Distanzierung gegenüber weltlichen Angelegenheiten. Bindungslosigkeit führt zur Freiheit von Irrglauben. Aus Freiheit von Irrglauben entsteht die Beständigkeit des Geistes (in der Meditation auf das höchste Wesen). Beständigkeit des Geistes führt zur Befreiung sogar während man noch am Leben ist.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
11. Welche lustvollen Vergnügungen gibt es noch wenn man sehr alt ist? Wie kann es dort ein See geben, wenn das Wasser versiegt ist? Welche Anhänger kann man haben, wenn jemandes Vermögen erschöpft ist? Sobald die letztendliche Realität erkannt ist, wie kann dort weiterhin weltliches Leben sein?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
12. Sei nicht hochmütig aufgrund von Reichtum oder Freunden oder Jugendlichkeit. Zeit zerstört alles in einem Augenblick. Gebe Bindungen zu dieser Welt auf, die nichts als Maya ist und erreiche den Zustand des Brahman durch Erkenntnis der Wirklichkeit.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
13. Die Nacht folgt dem Tag, der Abend folgt dem Morgen, Winter und Frühling wiederholen sich. Die Zeit spielt und das Leben geht aus. Aber die Kraft von Begierden vermindert sich nie.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
14. Durch diesen Strauß von zwölf Versen wurde vom gelehrten Sri Sankara Bhagavatpada eine Unterweisung an einen Grammatik-Schüler gegeben. (Die zwölf Verse sind die ab der zweiten Strophe. Der erste Vers ist eine Einführung.)&lt;br /&gt;
